Overheating electrical components can cause a full breakdown of the connection and have caused fires in large buildings, causing millions of dollars in damages.
They really make investigative work so much easier than manual troubleshooting and trying to locate where the problem is hiding. See below for an example of a problem we found on a customers switchboard. This shows the white conductor at a much higher temperature than the red and blue conductors. This problem was caused by a crimp lug that had not been properly compressed and this caused heating within the joint. The cable was re-terminated with a replacement lug and the conductor in question is no longer a potential problem.
